*LAST DAY OF SUMMER TERM - FRIDAY 17th JULY 2020.*

Thank you to you all for all your co-operation and ongoing support throughout the year, and in particular the last few months.

I have really enjoyed seeing all the hard work carried out by each pupil, along with the fun things you have been getting up to at home during the lockdown period.

I hope you all have an enjoyable and well deserved summer break!

Diolch yn fawr!

Home Learning

There will be no new home learning tasks set during the final week of the Summer term - Monday 13th July - Friday 17th July. Please use this opportunity for your child to complete any unfinished activities as well as acting upon their feedback to help move them forward in preparation for September.

Please click on the link to access the information for your childs home learning.

Pupils are set one main activity each day. These activites vary day to day, but are based within the 6 areas of learning:

  • Expressive Arts
  • Health and Well-being
  • Humanities
  • Languages, Literacy and Communication
  • Mathematics and Numeracy
  • Science and Technology.

Each of these activities offer new experiences for all pupils.

In addition to the home learning tasks being set for your child in our online classroom "Google for Education", pupils have been directed to complete 2 or 3 of our "Daily Activities". All pupils have access to the folder of activities and can choose which activities they would like to carry out additionally for that day. I have suggested that the activities that are chosen are changed each day so that over a week ALL daily activities will have been carried out.

Please follow us on Twitter @DafenSchool, where many different activities and links to home learning will be shared on a daily basis.

Please click on the image below to see a variety of activities that can be carried out at home without the need of any electronic device. Each activity comes under the 6 areas of learning.

May Half Term

There will be no home learning tasks set over the May Half Term holiday - Monday 25th May to Friday 29th May.

Instead, children will be provided with some fun actviities to carry out during this week. These activities are not mandatory and can be carried out as and when if the children wish to do so. The children have full access to each activity through our Google Classroom in the folder "May Half Term Activities".

Below are a list of activities (with links) that have been shared with the children:

1) Read a book
-"Be a Coronavirus Fighter"
-"Coronavirus - A Book for Children"
-"My Hero is you"

2) Math - "Rocket Rounding
Round to the nearest 10, 100 and whole number. Try doing it without the help of a number line.

3) Math - "Daily 10 - Mental Maths Challenge"
Choose your level and category.

4) English - "Crystal Explorers"
Use your knowledge of grammar, punctuation and spelling to solve the puzzles.

5) Math - “Guardians: Defenders of Mathematica
Add, subtract, divide and multiply your way to victory in this fun maths game.

6) Science - “Earth Squad, Go!”
You'll need to use your knowledge of the living world as you collect data and master your knowledge on plants, animals and the human body.

7) Welsh - “Meeting Friends and Family” (see link below)
What do you think they are talking about? Look at the Video Transcript afterwards to see if you were right!

8) Welsh - “Working on a Smoothies Stall” (see link below)
What smoothies did they order? What didn’t they like in a smoothie? Look at the Video Transcript afterwards to see if you were right!

9) Learn to sew a button on something
An important life skill to learn.

10) Create a "Pop-up Book"
Pop-up books are a great way to display information. You could make a pop-up book about a festival or special event, or you could make one based on your favourite topic such as dinosaurs, football or music.

11) Recycled Clothes Bunting
Bunting can make a nice decorative addition to any bedroom and is extremely fun to make. You will love cutting up old clothes and getting creative to make this colourful bunting to be displayed in your home.

12) Upcycle a Bowl
This is a fun way to recycle your old clothes by turning them into a funky bowl. This bowl will look great on the side in the kitchen, livingroom, bedroom or bathroom!

13) Mindfulness Colouring
Print off a sheet and relax whilst you colour. Even better, design your own mildndfulness colouring sheet to colour.

14) Fun Origami
Start with some very easy origami, like making a hat, and build our way up to some slightly harder models like making a triangle box.

15) Minecraft Competition
Use your imagination to build your dream museum in Minecraft. Decide how you would like the building to look and fill it with some of your favourite Museum objects. They could be anything from any of our seven museums, such as a Dinosaur, a Roman coin or a house from St Fagans!

16) Record Flipgrid message to the class (see classroom for details and the code)

17) Use your pupil voice to add to our Jamboard (see classroom for details and to access the link)

18) Complete any unfinished activities in our online classroom and "Hand in".

Thank you for all your support over the last half term. Stay safe and enjoy the well deserved break!

Diolch,

Miss Fallon

Topic

During the Summer term Blwyddyn 5/6 will be studying the following topic:

Tomorrow's World - ICT - Science and Technology

There are so many ways to communicate - text messages, emails, websites, blogs and podcasts.

Children will have opportunties to set up their own class blog and build a homepage on a subject of their choice. They can offer suggestions on how to improve the school website.

Children will discover the movers and shakers in the world of technology - the people who have shaped the modern world.

Blwyddyn 5/6 will learn how to build robots and circuits, break codes and investigate gadgets galore!

Help your child prepare for their project:

If the world today relies so heavily on technology, what will it be like in ‘tomorrow’s world’? Why not go on a technology hunt to locate computerised and robotic devices in your home? You could also create a survey to find out how much time your family and friends spend using technology each day. Alternatively, go online to research a significant figure in the computing world. What did they discover and how did this influence our daily lives?

PE

PE will be carried out on a Tuesday. Pupils are expected to change into their PE kit before the lesson and not to arrive to school in it.

Please make sure all items of clothing are labelled - Diolch.

Reading

Reading books and reading records need to be brought to school daily.

Homework

Reading is to be carried out 3 times between Monday to Friday and 3 times over the weekend. Please date and record the pages read.

Mental Math will be set twice a week - on a Monday and to be returned by Friday, and on a Friday to be returned Monday.

English and Maths homework will be set on a Tuesday to be returned the following Tuesday. If there are any problems with the homework then please see Miss Fallon before the due date.

Times tables should be revised on a regular basis.
